Week 1

Week 1: What is Reading, how does one assess reading, and how can we use those assessments?

To  assess reading it must be defined.

Reading is a complex developmental process in which the reader uses their own socio-cultural and schematic background along with their internal motivation to construct meaning from text and apply it appropriately across various contexts. (Definition create by EDU 537 at Dominican University. 5-15-12.)

Context encompasses both reader and text while purpose for reading is throughout all.

Assessments need  to be Reliable, Valid, tied to Curriculum or Content Standards, inform educational decisions, and serve the student.
Assessments can  FORMATIVE, which are used to teach to the student's reading needs or SUMMATIVE, which are used to measure growth.

FORMATIVE use Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development.

What is assessed is taught---What is more important to a learner's future the "right answer" or the confidence, stamina, and ability to find the "answer" ???????????????????????????????????????
